Getting away for a day trip is always a nice mini vacation. This trip we went to the Calico mountains near Barstow, California. There’s a little tourist trap Ghost Town that you can pay to get in to, but we don’t go there. Instead, we go to the off roading area nearby which includes all different levels of trails. Unfortunately, this trip we left our guide book at home. While this isn’t too much of a problem as we’ve been to the area before, we weren’t quite sure how to get to the Bismark mine without taking one of the more difficult trails. We never did find the trail to Bismark on this trip, but we still had a great time roaming around and doing a little metal detecting.
- It’s always fun to drive through holes in the dirt – more so when it’s muli-colored dirt.
- Slot canyon
- Don’t you love the swiss cheese rock?
- Coming out of the slot canyon
- Driving Mule Canyon Rd. making our way over to Tin Can Alley.
- Look carefully. Those aren’t rocks. That is vintage trash from the mining days. This is called Tin Can Alley for a good reason.
- The other side of Doran Scenic Drive – after coming through a side route.
- Sometimes you find unexpected things with a metal detector – like a bottle of soy sauce!. The label must have had something metallic in it.
